  • Teaching English to students coming from such diverse cultural backgrounds is very difficult. But this difficult task is successfully carried by the faculties teaching at Sharda. Though every teacher-learner quotient is different, but there are some common pedagogical practices that are followed by all the faculties teaching the International students. These are:
  • The Direct Approach

The direct method of teaching, which is sometimes called the natural method, and is often (but not exclusively) used in teaching foreign languages, refrains from using the learners' native language and uses only the target language. For this approach translation to one’s native language is not allowed and the Concepts are taught by means of objects or by natural contexts. Oral training helps in reading and writing and the student learns Grammar indirectly.

By following different Types of activities: Question/answer exercise, Dictation, Reading aloud, Student self-correction Conversation practice, Paragraph writing etc.

  • Community Language Learning (CLL)

CLL is a language-teaching method in which students work together to develop what aspects of a language they would like to learn. It is based on the Counseling-approach in which the teacher acts as a counsellor and a paraphraser, while the learner is seen as a client and collaborator.

As with most methods, CLL combines innovative learning tasks and activities with conventional ones. They include: Translation, Group Work, Reflection and observation, Listening, Free conversation.

  • Suggestopedia

Suggestopedia is a teaching method used mostly to learn foreign languages. This method is based on the idea that the mind has great potential and can retain information by the power of suggestion. This teaching method uses relaxation as a means of retaining new knowledge.

  • The Silent Way

The Silent Way is a language-teaching method that makes extensive use of silence as a teaching technique. Silent Way is based on the premise that the teacher should be as silent as possible in the classroom in order to encourage the learner to produce as much language as possible. The general goal is to help beginning-level students gain basic fluency in the target language.

  • Total Physical Response

Total physical response (TPR) is a language teaching method based on the coordination of language and physical movement. In TPR, instructors give commands to students in the target language, and students respond with whole-body actions. The listening and responding (with actions) serves two purposes: It is a means of quickly recognizing meaning in the language being learned, and a means of passively learning the structure of the language itself. TPR is a valuable way to learn vocabulary, especially idiomatic terms, e.g., phrasal verbs.

  • Communicative language teaching (CLT)

Communicative language teaching (CLT), or the communicative approach, is an approach to language teaching that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of study. The lessons contain activities where learners communicate and where tasks are completed by means of interaction with other learners.

  • The Audio-Lingual Method

This approach to language learning was similar to another, earlier method called the direct method. Like the direct method, the audio-lingual method advises that students should be taught a language directly, without using the native language. However, unlike the direct method, the audio-lingual method does not focus on teaching vocabulary. Rather, the teacher drills students in the use of grammar.

  • Grammar-Translation Approach

In grammar-translation classes, students learn grammatical rules and then apply those rules by translating sentences between the target language and the native language. Advanced students may be required to translate whole texts word-for-word. The method has two main goals: to enable students to read and translate literature written in the source language, and to further students’ general intellectual development.

  • Once Admission Letter / Visa Letter has been issued, the student should immediately apply for Student Visa at Indian Embassy / High Commission.
  • Make sure that you have applied for Visa well in advance. It generally takes 3-8 weeks to get the Indian Visa thus it is advisable to apply for the visa accordingly and consult the Indian High Commission/Embassy for the same.
  • International Relations Department of Sharda University will guide and assist every student with all the required processes for FRO/FRRO Registration.
